From the Plane Window

Reese Mitchell never sits in the window seat. It’s not something I prefer. Yet on the nine-hour flight to Italy, that’s exactly where I found myself. I can’t even remember the last time I sat in a window seat. To make things more stressful, I had control of two windows and spent most of the flight worrying about opening them at the wrong time and annoying my seatmates.

Reese Mitchell always falls asleep on the plane. But this time? I didn’t. Not even for a minute. For all nine hours, I stayed awake, listening to music and watching as our plane crossed the Atlantic. Riveting, I know.

But those two breaks from routine, a window seat and no sleep, gave me the chance to witness something beautiful. From that tiny window, wide awake, I watched the sun set as we took off and the sun rise as we landed.

It was spectacular. Sure, it looked like any other sunset or sunrise you’ve probably seen before, but have you ever listened to Slow Burn by Kacey Musgraves?

“In Tennessee the sun is going down, but in Beijing they’re headed out to work.”

The sun never clocks out. As it dipped below the Ozarks, that same sun was rising over Europe. No matter where we are, we all share the same sun.

I’m writing this at the beginning of my journey and can’t wait to share what I experience in Italy—under that very same sun.

So here’s to waiting my turn, knowing a few things, but still having a lot to learn.

With love always,
Reese Drucilla
